Geology and the Environment (lab)

Advising information: No prerequisites. Not intended for science or engineering majors. Geol 111/112 is an overview course of Earth & Environmental science. The course format is a large lecture section (240 students) and smaller lab (12-20). Lecture grades are based solely on 3-4 multiple choice common evening exams. Labs are hands-on activities that are synchronized with the lecture material whenever possible. Lab has weekly quizzes, periodic lab reports and/or other short writing exercises and 2 lab exams during the term. There are no other graded activities in 111/112 except for possible attendance points associated with lecture.

Introductory Geology Laboratory

Advising information: No prerequisites although a high school physical science or chemistry course would be a benefit. Intended for students with a vested or personal interest in Earth sciences including but not limited to majors of; College of Science or College of Engineering (any field), Geology (required), Soil Science, Architecture, Resource Economics, Secondary Education (science focus), Physical Geography and Archaeology. May also benefit certain Art focus areas such as ceramics, glass and metalwork. Course format includes a small to medium-sized lecture (15-45 commonly) and labs of 10-15 which makes for a more personal learning experience. Graded exercises in lecture include mixed format exams (T/F, multiple choice, short answer, essay), homework and term paper(s). Lab activities are hands-on exercises, lab reports and lab quizzes. Course often includes a field trip to area(s) of local geologic interest.

The Earth Through Time (lecture)

Earth Laboratory

Advising information: No prerequisites although a high school physical, biological or chemistry course would be a benefit. Intended for students with a vested or personal interest in the history of life (including dinosaurs) and the formation and development of Earth through time, including but not limited to majors of; College of Science or College of Engineering (any field), Geology (required), Zoology, History, Physical Geography, Secondary Education (science focus) and Archaeology. Course format includes a small to medium-sized lecture (12-40 commonly) and labs of 9 -12 which makes for a more personal learning experience. Graded exercises in lecture include mixed format exams (T/F, multiple choice, short answer, essay), homework and term paper(s). Lab activities are hands-on exercises, lab reports and lab quizzes. Course often includes a local field trip to examine and/or collect fossils.

Course format includes a small to medium-sized lecture (15-45 commonly) and labs of 10-15 which makes for a more personal learning experience. Graded exercises in lecture include mixed format exams (T/F, multiple choice, short answer, essay), homework and term paper/project. Lab activities are hands-on exercises, lab reports and lab quizzes. Course often includes a field trip to area(s) of local geologic interest.
