Investigating the Collapse of the Larsen Ice Shelf

Dr.Scott Ishman, assistant professor in the Department of Geology at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, has traveled to the Weddell Sea, one of the major seas on the continental margin of Antarctica. Along with a group of researchers from several universities around the country, Dr. Ishman is helping to investigate the disappearance of one of the major ice shelves in the Weddell Sea. The questions raised are:

1. Is the disappearance of the Larsen Ice Shelf a result of global warming? or
2. Is the disappearance of the Larsen Ice Shelf part of a natural process that is not linked to man's increased production of greenhouse gasses?

Collecting surface sediment samples, sediment cores, and other geological and oceanographic information from aboard the National Science Foundation Research Vessel Nathaniel B. Palmer, the scientific research team will address these questions.

Dr. Ishman will update the recent activities and findings on this site. Inquiries can be made to ishmansc@nbp.polar.org , but please keep them short to allow others to participate.
