Research Narrative

Zimmerman's initial (dissertation) research delt with the structure and metamorphism of rocks underlying the Vourinos ophiolite in northern Greece. Eventually this work expanded to include the internal structure and emplacement of other ophiolites in Greece (Pindos) and Alaska (Avan Hills).

At Esso Production Research Co. he had the opportunity to study plate margin deformation in several areas including the Caribbean, Alaska, and Australia.

His research at Southern Illinois University initially concentrated on the deformation (on all scales) of Paleozoic rocks in the Benton uplift, Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas. More recently he has undertaken detailed mapping and finite strain analysis of Archean metaconglomerates in western Montana. First from necessity, then for enjoyment he developed a related interest in the applications of computers to structural geology.
